From its permanent home at Varfell Farm, in Cornwall, The Collection consists of over 1600 names species and cultivars and is the only collection of Dahlias registered with Plant Heritage and therefore able to call itself a National Collection.
We supply rooted cuttings of all the Dahlias in the late spring of each year. The order book is open from July until the following March . We start taking cuttings, to order, in January and send them out to customers during April and May. Even cuttings planted in June will flower that season and make tubers to overwinter to the following year.
In the UK The National Dahlia Society issues a Directory of Dahlias with classifications relating to flower and petal formation. Certain classifications are divided further according to flower sizes.
In 2009 the National Collection displayed at the RHS Chelsea show. This was the first time dahlias had been shown at Chelsea for 25 years and we achieved a gold medal and the President’s Special Award for the best Floral exhibit. Since then, Golds have been achieved each time the National Collection has exhibited at Chelsea, ie in 2011 and 2013.
In recent years, the Collection has also achieved gold medals at the RHS Hampton Court , Tatton Park, Malvern and Westminster Flower Shows, including a Gold this year at Hampton Court.
